AKASHIYA

The brush has a long history, and it is said that it began in China during the Qin dynasty about 2,300 years ago. In Japan, along with the introduction of Chinese culture, Chinese-made brushes began to be imported from the early Asuka period.

Later, during the reign of Emperor Saga, Kobo Daishi (Kukai), who traveled to China as an envoy to Tang Dynasty China, returned to Japan after learning how to make calligraphy brushes. And it is said to be the beginning of Japanese brush making.

Nara Fude has inherited the craftsmanship and spirit nurtured by its history and tradition, and by maintaining high quality, it is still highly evaluated by calligraphers and experts.

Akashiya has been engaged in making brushes as a calligrapher for the Nanto Seven Great Temples in the country of Yamato since ancient times. In the middle of the Edo period, the first head of the family established Akashiya as a wholesaler of brushes.
