OHTO
The history of ballpoint pen is the history of OHTO
In 1919, we established an ink manufacturing company in Tokyo.
Since then, in 1949, we developed Japan’s first ballpoint pen, the “Auto Pencil,”
which was also the world’s first pencil-shaped ballpoint pen using a chrome ball.
Furthermore, in 1964, we introduced the revolutionary “W” ballpoint pen,
which used water-based ink instead of oil-based ink.
OHTO has always been committed to pursuing innovative technologies in writing instruments.
Pioneer of the Ballpoint Pen
Founded in 1919, OHTO produced Japan's first ballpoint pen in 1949. Since then, they have achieved numerous world-firsts — including the water-based roller pen (1964) and the ceramic rollerball pen (1981). Over a century of innovation has shaped the history of writing instruments.
Proprietary Technology
OHTO's signature ceramic ball tip is rust-free and ultra-smooth. Combined with their patented Non-Dry Refill system, fast-drying gel ink, and precision Needle-Point Tip, their proprietary technologies deliver a writing experience that stands apart.
Crafted in Japan
Tips, inks, and finished products are all manufactured in-house at their Yuuki Factory in Ibaraki, Japan. This vertically integrated production ensures consistent quality across their full range — from writing instruments to office supplies and OEM/private-label solutions. Their wooden pen WN series also uses PEFC-certified timber, reflecting a commitment to sustainable forestry.
